Current: David
Patton Los Angeles is pleased to present an exhibition of work by Keith
Holbrook. This is Holbrook's third solo exhibition at the gallery, his
first in our Chinatown location. For this exhibition Holbrook has created a number of collages from his go-to well of material: the magazines and other marketing materials of art. Holbrook has said; “Douglas Hubler’s statement of not wanting to add any more objects to the large heap already out there is an idea that I continually come back to when making art. Gleaning from the detritus created from the marketing of art, I utilize the images and language the art industry generates to push it’s wares. This material is junk, discarded after a month or two, but its appropriation targets the propriety of the copyright. The management and deployment of this material has becomes a primary part of making art for me.” Among
the collage pieces in this exhibition are three of Holbrook’s long
scroll pieces. One of these, “By The Foot” (2009) is a 10.5 inches
wide by 30 feet long monochromatic collage made up of white space/paper found
in the pages of art magazines. This piece will be available as the title
describes. Two other long scroll pieces, both titled “Colors of...” (2009),
are part of a series that was first on view at London’s Zoo Fair
last year. One of these works is monochromatic white (29 feet 2 inches long)
while the other is made up of all colors found (23 feet 11 inches). Holbrook’s
continued interest in the L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E group of poets provides the inspiration
for a number of smaller collages that create poetry out of words and phrases
taken from different magazine advertisements and then grouped together. Lastly,
a series of works titled “A Season” represent the art world season
as a collection of paper strips, each containing the name of a month, with
compositions created from the different ads that donate to the collage. Holbrook’s
direct methods lead to charming conceptual and pictorial results. For additional information, please contact the gallery. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday 12 noon to 6 PM and by appointment. |
